How the energy we use shapes the climate, and why the shift to cleaner sources matters.

The climate is the long-term pattern of temperature, rainfall, wind, and weather that a region experiences over decades. It is shaped by the balance of energy the planet receives from the Sun and the energy it radiates back into space. When gases such as carbon dioxide and methane build up in the atmosphere, they trap more of that outgoing heat and gradually warm the planet.

Most of the extra warming of the past century traces back to how we produce energy. Burning coal, oil, and natural gas releases carbon that had been locked underground for millions of years, adding it to the atmosphere far faster than natural cycles can remove it. The result is warmer average temperatures, shifting rainfall, and more frequent extreme weather.

The encouraging part of the story is that the tools to change course already exist. Solar panels, wind turbines, efficient buildings, and cleaner transport all reduce the carbon released per unit of energy used. Every improvement in efficiency and every shift toward low-carbon energy slows the buildup and buys time for ecosystems and communities to adapt.
