Biodiversity & Conservation

The variety of life on Earth, the services it quietly provides, and how it is protected.

Biodiversity is the full variety of living things — the range of species, the genetic differences within them, and the ecosystems they form together. A healthy, diverse ecosystem is more resilient: it recovers from disturbances more readily and continues to function when conditions change.

This variety does far more than fill nature documentaries. Insects pollinate the crops we eat, wetlands filter our water, forests store carbon and stabilize soil, and countless organisms recycle nutrients that keep the whole system running. These are often called ecosystem services because we depend on them even when we never notice them.

Conservation is the practical work of keeping that web intact — protecting habitat, restoring degraded land, managing how we fish and farm, and giving threatened species room to recover. It works best when local communities, scientists, and landowners share both the effort and the benefits.

Why it matters

  • Diverse ecosystems are more stable and recover faster from shocks.
  • Pollination, water filtration, and carbon storage are services provided free by nature.
  • Habitat loss is the leading pressure on wildlife worldwide.
