The idea for
Street News
came to Hutchinson Persons, founder and the paper's first editor, one day while walking through Grand Central Station. "What an untapped work force," he reports thinking. "All these people just lying around here. But what can they do? This thought plagued me off and on, day and night, for about a week until suddenly it hit me... they could sell papers."
According to Persons, a thousand homeless and nearly homeless men and women sold more than one million copies in New York City alone in the first few months of publication. Distribution is expanding to other cities.
