8. Buy Street News
The opportunity to help can be as close as the street corner of any major
American city. In March 1990, my daughter paused near Columbia University to
purchase the latest copy of Street News from a homeless man. Street
News is a biweekly newspaper that includes articles by celebrities, business
executives, and the homeless and is intended to help the homeless help
themselves.
When they ask, homeless people are given free starter kits of Street News
by the publishers to hawk on streets and public areas. From the proceeds the
homeless vendors earn, they can buy further copies of the paper for 25 cents
each and sell them for a dollar. For every paper sold, the homeless earn five
cents deposited in a special savings account earmarked for rent. The vendir at
Columbia told my daughter, "I have been able to rent a room on what I made sell
Street News ."
