6. Carry Fast-Food Gift Certificates
Suspicion is sometimes well-placed. We don't want to be taken advantage of. Recenlty I received a call from a man passing through town who needed money. "My shoes are worn out and my feet are starting to swell. Can you give me $50 for shoes?"
I'd grown tired of phone scams--the clergy are considered by many to be an easy touch.
"I can't give you cash," I told him, "but I will me you at the shoe store and buy you a pair of shoes." Certain my caller wouldn't show, I made my way downtown. To my surprise he was there at the shoe store waiting for me--his severely deformed foot encased in a tattered shoe.
Since that day I've often thought: What if I allow my suspicions and apprehensions to get the best of me? What if all of us were to allow our distrust to shape our responses to the needy people who seek our help?
