The state of New Jersey has one of the best homelessness prevention programs in the nation. Its purpose: to provide "temporary assistance of last resort (loans, security, etc.) to households facing imminent eviction or foreclosure, because for reasons beyond their control they lack funds." The urgent need might be the result of a medical crisis, a natural disaster, nonpayment of child support, job loss, or a delay in receiving government benefits.
