48. Stand Up For The Civil Rights Of The Homeless
In New York City and elsewhere the American Civil Liberties Union and others have fought for the right of homeless people to beg. There are numerous other examples--recently in Miami supporters of the homeless pressured to establish "safe zones" where homeless people could go and receive protection from those who were stealing from them, or otherwise maltreating them. In fact, one of the purposes was to protect them from the police, who often used violence to remove homeless people from the streets.
