54 Ways You Can Help The Homeless - Overview

VII. Really Make A Commitment

45. Start A Second Harvest Program

Second Harvest is a national food bank network of over 180 local food banks that supply shelters, soup kitchens, day care centers, senior programs, and other charities that serve meals. The food in this program is donated by restaurants, grocery stores, manufacturers, and distributors, among others. The network program typically arranges pickups and delivery of the donations.

If there isn't a program like this in place in your community already, this would be a good service to provide, both for local businesses that sell food (they get tax write-offs for donations and a chance to salvage perfectly good food rather than throwing it out) and for charities that provide meals to the homeless. Get in touch with Second Harvest to find out about starting a food recycling program in your community or supporting one already in your area.
