44. Play With Children In A Shelter
I walked into our Temple's shelter early one evening. In one corner I saw a 15-year-old in my confirmation class playing checkers with a young guest. At a table, a 12-year-old girl was helping a pre-schooler choose different crayons for her scetch. Another Temple student was reading to a couple of kids. Their parents were there too, socializing with our adult guests and helping one woman fill out some forms.
When I see parents and children coming to the shelter together as a family to volunteer, I know that the guests gain a great deal and so does the volunteer family. The family feels that they really can live by their ideals and values and the guests know that people really care enough to take time for one-to-one contact.
