Once a week, girls in a Brownie troop in Connecticut prepare dinner for 45 shelter guests.
Kindergarten children make placemats on holiday and seasonal themes and donate them to the local shelter. They brighten the meals and give people a feeling that everyone cares.
Boy Scouts of America have a nationwide project called "Scouting for Food." In communities accross the country, hundreds of Cub Scouts, Explorers, and Boy Scouts, aided by their parents and other adult volunteers, distribute special contribution bags. They return later, collect the bags filled with staples, and distribute them to shelters and food pantries. The bags, contributed by a regional supermarket chain, list the items needed. Instructions include: "Place your filled bag on your doorstep by 9:00 a.m. the Saturday after you receive your bag. Scouts will pick up the bag no later than 3:00 p.m. (Please! No outdated items)."
Play groups in Minnesota and Massachusetts bake cupcakes and cookies and drop off in the afternoon at shelters.
