On October 29, 1992 a truck arrived in southern New Jersey with thousands of blankets for the homeless. Since the 1960s, in churches across teh country, collections have been taken on an annual "Blanket Sunday" to help Church World Service (the overseas relief agency of the National Council of Churches) provides blankets for starving people in Africa.

As the homeless population in the United States grew, more funds were raised so that blankets could also go to the needy in America. Reverend Lee Schmookler, director of the Goodwill Home and Mission in Newark, observed, "While blankets may seem token aid for a homeless person, they are very definately a need. Anything that helps the poor stretch a dollar is a benefit."

The Dayspring Center of Indianapolis, IN, runs a linens drive year around. The linens are given to guests to use while they reside at the shelter. When they obtain more permanent housing, they take the linens with them. Dayspring, which never buys linens estimates that the linens donations are worth $25,000 a year.
