36. Ask Your Clergy To Help
Six hundred churches and synagogues are involved in Interfaith Hospitality Networks in New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Michigan, Minnesota, and Texas.
Here's how it works. Ten houses of worship take turns providing shelter and meals for homeless families. Each chutch and synagogue hosts for a week or two. They get plenty of guidance and hands-on support from a local network coordinating agency which provides transportation, counseling, and a comprehensive assistance program resulting in 70 percent of the families finding permanent housing.
Twenty-eight thousand volunteers are involved and the numbers grow every day. In one New Jersey county, the Network increased the number of shelter beds by 56 percent.
