In my town, a party coordinator donated her talents to organize a "Thanksgiving Gathering" for people experiencing difficult times. As she put it, "Perhaps your family is far away... you've lost a spouse or loved one... or you're without work and having financial troubles."
Area merchants, especially restaurants, donated food and merchandise while the YMCA provided the space. Over 100 grateful guests enjoyed a happy Thanksgiving.
