Publishing companies donate their books each year to the Book Fair for the Homeless which benefits the
Goddard-Riverside Community Center.
The Center, on New York City's Upper West Side, provides day care, head start, and legal support for the poor and homeless.
On the weekend before a recent Book Fai r, 20 dinners were held in private homes with contemporary writers in attendance including Roger Angell, Isaac Asimov, E.L. Doctorow, Gael Greene, Tom Wolfe, Erica Jong, and Kurt Vonnegut. During the week, performances by the Paperbag Players and bookreadings by the wife of the Mayer were held at schools. On Friday evening, there was a preview and live auction. The Book Fair itself took place on Saturday and Sunday. In its first five years, this event has raised half-a-million dollars for the needy and provided permanent homes for 500 people and assistance to thousands more.
