33. Educate Your Children About The Homeless
In my congregation, parents who server meals at the shelter come with their children who play with the young guests. When they get home they discuss their expectations and feelings after those visits.
I also know parents who try to protect their children from ever seeing the homeless. That's a big mistake, for when the children do finally enter the real world, they will lack understanding. Children need to know very early that there is poverty and homelessness in their town, and that they can make a difference. This also enables our children to become more caring and sensitive human beings.
