Public opinion polls reveal that American people consider homelessness a top priority and are willing to pay more taxes to solve the problem. Americans are mostly a compassionate people, and we are troubled by the enormous gaps between the righ and poor in our land. Many of us do not sleep easily knowing that hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children are sleeping on grates, under bridges, and in doorways. Many of us do not enjoy our meals knowing that vast numbers of Americans are going hungry.
