54 Ways You Can Help The Homeless - Overview

IV. Volunteer To Help The Homeless

23. Volunteer Your Follow-Up Programs

The Junior League of Plainfield (NJ) operates a "Casserole program" at the local center for the formerly homeless and others at risk of becoming homeless. Members prepare meals and bring them to the Wednesday lunch program where they share recipes with the guests and establish on-going relationships. They also bring food to the rooms or apartments of former guests.

Speakers come to the Wednesday lunch program and share their knowledge of parenting, AIDS education, legal rights, and medical information.

A retired professor at the local community college tutors five children in math and English once a week.

Three former guests at the center needed Christmas trees. Volunteers delivered them to their homes.

Do you have expertise in an area? Chances are you can share it through follow-up and make quite a difference in the lives of the needy as well as your own.
