Take Jim Hubbard, a Washington, D.C. professional photographer whose specialty is photographing the homeless. Tapping his own skills, Hubbard created "Shooting Back," a program that teaches homeless children photography.

He takes eight homeless children each week through Washington's streets, provides them with free film and camera, and teaches them how to use the the camera. The kids rarely shoot images of decay. "A lot of what they shoot is really joyful," stated Hubbard. "Kids leaping into swimming pools, playing in the water spray from fire hydrants, and the faces of other children."

When asked why he teaches children how to use a camera when what they need is shelter, Hubbard responded, "Housing won't be enough. Self-esteem is a big issue, particularly with children. Mastering the camera and seeing their own images in print have boosted their confidence."
