19. Volunteer At A Shelter
I recall chairing a meeting in New York City attended by an Atlanta attorney who informed me that he intended to leave our session early to catch a mid-day flight back to Atlanta to serve meals at the shelter. "Chuck," he said in his Southern drawl, "I wouldn't miss that commitment for anything. Nothing I do is more important."
What is so significant about serving shelter meals that this attorney would shorten his trip? Could it be that with all of his success--financial, professional, personal--there remains an emptiness that does not let him rest? After all the vacations we take, the material goods we acquire, the honors we accumulate, do we sense that there is something else that we need to do to make our lives complete?
