16. Give Welcome Kits
A group of factory workers in St. Louis had been sitting at the same table in the company cafeteria eating lunch together every day for nearly 10 years. They obviously enjoyed each other's company. They complained about their problems and bragged about their accomplishments. It was a cozy group.
A few days before Thanksgiving, one of them suggested that since they had plenty of blessings--a good job, nice children, a car or van that ran well, decent health--maybe they should give something back to people who were very poor.
So they decided to put together "welcome kits," plastic bags consisting of toilet items, candy and small items of clothing, like a hat, gloves, or socks. They all promised to bring a bag to lunch every Monday. Each week a different person would volunteer to take the bags to a local shelter.
