14. Give A Bag Of Groceries
A church in Birmingham, Alabama asked every parishioner to bring a bag of groceries to the service on Easter Sunday. They filled six vans and replenished the local food pantry (whose stocks were depleted) with enough staples for the next month.
Reform synagogues throughout America ask their members to bring groceries on Yom Kippur which is a fast day. Instead of consuming food themselves, they provide nourishment for the hungry. Each synagogue collects between 500 and 10,000 pounds of food on the Jewish Day of Atonement.
Many churches, mosques, and synagogues keep baskets in the lobby outside their sanctuary so members may deposit food for the hungry every day of the year. Homeless people don't just need sustenance by way of a Christmas of Thanksgiving feast... As the Lord's Prayer makes clear, "Give us this day our daily bread..."
